Alright guys, it's time for a confession -- I'm having some serious problems with Shambles. Here's my deal:
- I have roughly plotted out the whole storyline, but not scripted it.
I have drawn 55 pages over the past year and I’m only about 5% through this storyline.
It’s taken me about 8 hours per page, and there are still several pages that I’m not satisfied with.
If I kept busting out pages at the pace I’m going now, I would finish with about 1100 pages and it would take me 8360 more hours. I don’t wanna draw that many pages, you don’t wanna read that many pages, and if by some miracle I actually finished, the art on the last page would be so different from the art on the first page that the comic would not flow at all.
I’m very happy with the plotline I created and I’ve put a lot of work and research into designing this story. I want to do it, but I want it to be good -- so I’ve decided to start over with a different approach.
I’m going to script out the entire story before I start any pages, and it’s going to be MUCH shorter. I’m thinking 250 pages max, which means no more side plots and no more sewer cats. I will plan out each page so that it connects to the plot and it’s worth the hours it takes to draw it. Once I have that worked out, I’ll do all the art at once, so I can edit my storyboard up until then and my style stays consistent throughout the comic.
TL;DR: Shambles is not dead, but it’s gonna be under renovation for a while. When it comes back, it will be a much better comic.
If you’ve been reading Shambles on here or on deviantart, now would be a good time for some feedback. As in, what do you like about the comic? What do I need to improve on?
Basically, what should I keep and what should I scrap?
(Or if you’re just mad at me for starting over, you are welcome to scream at me in an angry comment. I’m sorry.)
